Shadows and Starlight in the Green Room
The heavy mahogany door clicked shut, cutting off the concussive bass of the audio check rattling the stadium rafters outside. Inside, the private dressing room was a sanctuary of bruised twilight and exhausted stillness. The overhead fluorescent lights had been switched off, leaving only the amber glow of the vanity bulbs casting long, dramatic silhouettes across the room’s Persian rug.

Prithviraj exhaled a long, shuddering breath, pressing the heels of his hands against his eyes. The rehearsal for the night’s grand finale had been grueling—hours of blocking, cameras, and orchestrated chaos. But the physical exhaustion weighing down his broad shoulders was nothing compared to the quiet, agonizing hum that had been vibrating beneath his skin all afternoon.

He didn’t need to turn around to know he wasn't alone.

The soft, measured cadence of footsteps on the plush carpet told him everything. Vishnu was still there.

Prithviraj dropped his hands, blinking against the dim light, and looked up at the mirror. Reflected in the glass, Vishnu was leaning casually against the doorframe, his dark shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with tension. Vishnu’s gaze was already locked onto Prithviraj’s reflection, heavy, dark, and utterly unreadable—yet speaking volumes.

"You're quiet tonight, Prithvi," Vishnu said, his voice a low, raspy velvet that seemed to wrap directly around Prithviraj’s ribs, tightening them.

"Just thinking," Prithviraj replied, his voice deeper than usual, gravelly from fatigue. He turned slowly on the stool, facing the room, though the space between them suddenly felt suffocatingly narrow. "It's loud out there."

"Then don't listen to it."

Vishnu pushed away from the door. He didn't walk fast; every step was deliberate, predatory in its slowness, burning a path through the charged air between them. The space in the dressing room shrank with every inch Vishnu closed. The air grew thick, fragrant with the lingering scent of cedarwood, sweat, and something entirely, uniquely Vishnu.

Prithviraj’s pulse spiked, a frantic, hummingbird flutter against his throat. He remained seated, his tall frame dwarfing the vanity chair, but as Vishnu stopped just an arm's length away, Prithviraj felt entirely pinned. Powerless. Willing to be.

"You've been avoiding me all day," Vishnu murmured, his voice dropping an octave as he stopped directly between Prithviraj’s knees.

The proximity was electric. Prithviraj had to tilt his head back just to meet Vishnu’s dark, luminous eyes. Up close, Vishnu’s breathing was shallow, his chest rising and falling in a rhythmic echo of Prithviraj’s own erratic heartbeat.

"I haven't been avoiding you," Prithviraj countered, though the lie tasted weak even to his own ears.

"Haven't you?" Vishnu tilted his head, a faint, dangerous ghost of a smile playing on his lips. He reached out, his fingers hovering mere millimeters from Prithviraj’s jawline. He didn't touch him—not yet—leaving the phantom heat of his hand to scorch Prithviraj’s skin before contact was even made. "Every time you looked at me on that stage, you pulled away. Why? Are you scared of what the cameras might catch, or what I might see?"

Prithviraj swallowed hard. His throat felt dry, his mouth parched. The psychological pull between them wasn't just a magnetic force; it was gravitational, pulling them inexorably into an orbit from which neither of them wanted to escape.

"I'm not scared of cameras, Vishnu," Prithviraj whispered, the confession tearing itself free from a place he usually kept heavily guarded.

"Then what?" Vishnu stepped closer still, closing the final gap until his thighs brushed against Prithviraj’s knees.

The heat radiating off Vishnu was intoxicating. Prithviraj’s hands gripped the edges of the vanity table, his knuckles turning white as he fought the primal urge to reach out, to fist his fingers in Vishnu’s shirt and drag him down. The silence in the room stretched, thick and pregnant with unsaid words, years of mutual admiration, and a sudden, overwhelming romantic hunger that defied logic.

"Of losing control," Prithviraj admitted, the words slipping out on a ragged exhale. His gaze dropped momentarily to Vishnu’s lips before snapping back to his eyes. "When you're this close to me, I forget everything else. The cameras, the show, the noise. It all just... dissolves."

Vishnu’s breath hitched. The confident, teasing facade melted away, replaced by an intensity so raw it made Prithviraj’s chest ache. Vishnu slowly lowered his hand, his fingertips finally making contact with the rough stubble along Prithviraj’s jaw.

The touch was feather-light, yet it sent a searing bolt of lightning straight down Prithviraj’s spine. A low, involuntary shudder rippled through Prithviraj’s frame, his eyes fluttering closed for a fraction of a second as he leaned instinctively into the warmth of Vishnu’s palm.

"Let it dissolve, then," Vishnu whispered, his voice trembling slightly, betraying the armor he usually wore so well. "Look at me, Prithvi. Only at me."

Prithviraj opened his eyes. In the amber glow of the dressing room, Vishnu’s face was inches from his own. He could see the tiny amber flecks in Vishnu’s dark iris, the faint pulse fluttering at the base of his throat, the way his chest heaved with every shared breath. The air between them was so saturated with desire that every inhale felt like drinking liquid fire.

Slowly, deliberately, Vishnu leaned in.

Time seemed to fracture, stretching out into an eternity of anticipation. Every heartbeat felt like a drumbeat signaling the approach of something inevitable. Prithviraj didn't move away; instead, his posture shifted, his shoulders squaring as he met Vishnu halfway, closing the micro-distance left between them.

Their breaths mingled—warm, sweet, and heavy with longing. The distance vanished.

When their foreheads finally rested gently against one another, a collective sigh seemed to leave both of them. It wasn't just physical proximity; it was a profound, aching alignment of two souls who had spent too long dancing around the periphery of each other's lives.

Vishnu’s thumb traced a slow, hypnotic circle over Prithviraj’s cheekbone, his touch lingering like a benediction. "You have no idea how long I've wanted this," Vishnu breathed against Prithviraj’s lips, the words a soft, trembling caress.

"I have some idea," Prithviraj murmured back, his hand finally moving, sliding up to cup the back of Vishnu’s neck, feeling the soft hair at the nape and the heat radiating from his skin. He pulled Vishnu just a fraction closer, anchoring him there in the quiet dark. "Because I've been burning with it too."

Outside, the muffled sounds of the stadium grew distant, fading into absolute irrelevance. In this small, sequestered corner of the world, there was no audience, no expectations, and no masks. There was only the dizzying pull of gravity, the racing rhythm of synchronized heartbeats, and the intoxicating, slow-burn realization that there was no turning back from the fire they had just allowed to consume them.
