The air on the thirty-second-floor terrace was thick with the scent of saltwater, blooming night-cestrum, and the faint, intoxicating trace of cedarwood and amber. Below them, Marine Drive curved in a brilliant, glittering crescent, the amber streetlights forming a necklace of fire against the deep indigo curve of the Arabian Sea. The endless hum of Mumbai traffic filtered up as a distant, rhythmic tide, a world away from the suffocating glare of flashbulbs, screaming fans, and the relentless machinery of their respective lives.

Up here, hidden behind frosted glass and towering wrought-iron planters, there was only the wind. And the space between them.

Vijay stood near the glass balustrade, one hand resting on the cool metal, his broad shoulders defined against the city lights. He hadn’t bothered with his jacket; his crisp white linen shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with tension. He was watching the horizon, or perhaps pretending to, but every muscle in his frame was hyper-aware of the other man standing just paces behind him.

Kartik hadn’t moved from the threshold of the sliding glass door. He felt glued to the marble tiles, his breathing shallow, his pulse hammering a violent, erratic rhythm against his ribs. He wanted to blame the champagne, or the dizzying altitude, but he knew better. It was Vijay. It was always Vijay—this gravitational pull that had been drawing them into each other's orbit for months, forged in stolen glances across crowded green rooms, accidental brushes of shoulders at awards after-parties, and late-night, labyrinthine text conversations that bled into the dawn.

Tonight, there was no escape hatch. No public handlers, no flashing cameras, no fictional character to hide behind. Just the two of them, suspended in the velvet dark.

"You're awfully quiet," Vijay said softly. His voice was a rich, low rasp that seemed to vibrate directly against the sensitive skin of Kartik's throat. He didn’t turn around, but the tilt of his head showed he was listening for every intake of breath.

"And you're brooding like a tragic hero in a classic romance," Kartik countered, forcing a lightness into his tone that fell entirely flat, swallowed up by the heavy, electric heat stretching across the terrace.

Vijay let out a low chuckle, a rich sound that sent a shiver straight down Kartik's spine. Slowly, deliberately, Vijay pushed away from the railing and turned to face him.

The movement was unhurried, yet it felt like a predator closing the distance. Kartik’s breath hitched. He forced his feet to stay planted, refusing to retreat, even as every survival instinct in his body screamed that he was standing too close to a live wire.

"Come here," Vijay murmured. It wasn't a request. It was an undertow.

Kartik stepped forward. Once. Twice.

The space between them compressed until it was charged with static electricity. Up close, Vijay was overwhelming—tall, broad, smelling of expensive cologne and the warm, indefinable scent of skin heated by the tropical night. His dark eyes, usually flashing with the effortless charisma that drove millions wild, were dead serious, narrowed in a gaze so intense it felt like a physical touch.

"You look at me like that," Kartik whispered, his voice trembling slightly, betraying the armor he usually wore so effortlessly, "and you forget I have a reputation to protect, Deverakonda."

"To hell with your reputation," Vijay replied, his voice dropping an octave, slipping past the barrier of casual banter into something raw, unmasked, and terrifyingly sincere. "I'm tired of reputations, Kartik. I'm tired of looking at you across a crowded room and pretending you're just another colleague. I'm tired of counting the seconds until I can breathe again."

Kartik’s heart performed a violent acrobatics routine. The confession hung in the warm sea breeze, heavy and undeniable. For months, they had danced around the edge of this precipice, hiding behind smirks and witty retorts, terrified of what would happen if they jumped. But standing here, inches apart in the dark, the fall felt inevitable.

"You shouldn't say things like that," Kartik breathed, though he didn't lean back. Instead, his eyes dropped involuntarily to Vijay’s mouth—to the slight parting of his lips, the faint shadow of stubble along his jawline.

"Watch me," Vijay whispered.

Vijay raised a hand, his movements agonizingly slow, giving Kartik every chance in the world to pull away. But Kartik was paralyzed, rooted to the spot by a longing so fierce it ached behind his ribs. Vijay’s warm fingertips brushed against the side of Kartik’s neck, right over the racing pulse point beneath his ear.

The contact was electric. A jolt of pure, unfiltered heat raced down Kartik’s spine, making his knees weak. He gasped softly, his eyelids fluttering downward at the sheer intensity of the sensation. Vijay’s thumb traced the line of his jaw, feather-light, yet leaving a trail of fire in its wake.

"Your pulse is racing," Vijay noted, his voice a gravelly caress. His thumb lingered on Kartik’s lower lip, tracing its contour with a reverence that felt almost sacred. "Good. At least I'm not the only one coming apart at the seams."

Kartik swallowed hard, his chest heaving against Vijay’s forearm as the taller man closed the remaining micro-inch of space. Now, they were flush. There was no air left between them, only the shared heat of their bodies, the synchronization of their racing breaths, and the intoxicating magnetism that had been building like a summer storm for a year.

"You're dangerous, you know that?" Kartik murmured, his fingers finally finding the courage to move, curling tentatively into the soft linen of Vijay’s shirt at his waist, feeling the hard muscle beneath.

"Only for you," Vijay replied, his gaze dropping to Kartik’s lips, lingering there with a hunger that he no longer bothered to mask.

The silence stretched, thick with unspent tension, every second stretching into eternity as they balanced on the razor's edge of restraint. The city hummed below them, oblivious to the universe collapsing into this single, suspended point on a rooftop terrace.

Vijay leaned in, his forehead resting lightly against Kartik’s, their breaths mingling—warm, heavy, and sweet. The friction of their bodies was an exquisite torture, a slow-burn agony that promised everything and demanded even more. Kartik closed his eyes, letting the darkness swallow everything except the feeling of Vijay’s hand cradling his jaw, the solid warmth of his chest, and the intoxicating certainty that there was no turning back from this.

"Then stop holding back," Kartik whispered into the dark, his voice a breathless surrender.

And in the glow of a million city lights, the space between them finally vanished.
